By a 13 and a 16-year old! Ridiculous, right? However, I am a small woman. I like to say, "I’m 5 feet in shoes," but the truth is, I’m smaller than just about every other adult—and many children!—I know. You might say I appear to be a natural-born victim, especially when I was a naive college kid, believing, "It will never happen to me; they won’t bother me if I don’t bother them".
So I routinely rode home on my bicycle through city streets after off-campus school assignments. One dreary winter day, I was pedaling along through a ghetto area I’d ridden several times before. Next thing I knew, 2 young ruffians were knocking me off my bike and getting ready to ride away on it. When I tried to resist, they whipped me with a knotted chain.
Luckily, my injuries weren’t serious, but it was a terrifying experience, nonetheless. And since I was then left defenseless, in a bad neighborhood, the outcome could have been much worse. So, here I was, at age 19, open, trusting in the innate good of man, a victim of a violent crime I never anticipated. This experience could have been enough to instill me with permanent fear and anxiety.
